But one Times reader (unknow to me, of course) replied in a Reader Comment that Trump has no intention of “Making America Great Again”.  He posits that Trump is trying to “burn the whole thing down” so that he and his billionaire cronies can swoop in and make a “crony capitalist” killing by buying up what’s left of the ruins for a discount price – jus like Putin did in post-Soviet Russia.

By now, it should be clear to all but the most willfully blind that Donald Trump has no real interest in "Making America Great Again," let alone in making the country stronger or more prosperous. 

What we are witnessing is not a populist movement to restore American greatness, but rather destruction capitalism in action—the idea that chaos and institutional breakdown can be profitable for those at the top. Trump and his inner circle of enablers are not playing a political game in the traditional sense. Instead, they are advancing a model where democratic norms are dismantled, public trust is eroded, and government is hollowed out—not as collateral damage, but as the main objective.

This is not accidental. In this version of capitalism, the billionaire class benefits from the destruction of regulations, the weakening of democratic institutions, and the deepening of social divisions. When systems fail, opportunists swoop in—snatching up distressed assets, exploiting deregulation, and consolidating power. 

Trumpism isn’t about building a better America; it’s about burning it down and cashing in on the ashes.

I would add to this thesis that there are lots of “hangers on” to this vision.  Specifically the rabid Christo-fascists and neo-monarchists (ala Curtis Yarvin and J D Vance) who would love to use this “creative destruction” to craft a Gilead-like repressive dictatorship out of the ashes.  As long as Trump and his co-conspirators gain Putin-like riches from the destruction of the United States and the global order – I doubt that they much care what sort of “government” takes over after that.
