the dreaded 'sequester', where spending cuts will be applied with a chainsaw, rather than a scalpel, there are 2 ways to avoid it. Because this was supposed to be a trigger so dreadful and dire and stupid, it was assumed Congress would force itself to come up with a reasonable deficit reduction plan to avoid it. Ha. Ha.

A Pew Research Center/USA Today survey released Thursday found that only 19 percent of Americans believe that the focus of deficit reduction should be only on spending cuts. Seventy-six percent want a combination of spending cuts and tax increases, with more emphasis on the former than the latter.
