Following his inauguration, Donald Trump has fired numerous high-ranking military officials, including the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the director of the National Security Agency, and the head of the Defense Intelligence Agency
. The dismissals, many without public explanation, have drawn strong condemnation from lawmakers and former defense officials.
Key firings and removals since January 2025
- Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: Gen. CQ Brown Jr., the nation's top uniformed military officer, was abruptly fired in February, less than two years into his four-year term.
- National Security Agency Director: Air Force Gen. Tim Haugh was removed in early April. The move was heavily criticized by members of Congress.
- Defense Intelligence Agency Director: Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Kruse was fired by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on August 22, 2025, over what was officially termed a "loss of confidence".
- Chief of Naval Operations and others: In February, the administration also removed Admiral Lisa Franchetti, the Navy's top officer, and Gen. James Slife, the Air Force's Vice Chief of Staff.
- Senior military lawyers: The administration fired the top lawyers, or Judge Advocates General (JAGs), for the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
- Head of Coast Guard: Admiral Linda Fagan, the first woman to lead one of the six military services, was removed in January.
- Senior officials at NATO: Vice Adm. Shoshana Chatfield was dismissed in April.
- Hundreds of lower ranking officers have also been fired, with no explanation given, other than ‘lack of confidence’.
