I was shocked to see that Russia/Ukraine grow and export over 30% of the world’s wheat. This used to be the domain of American farmers.

 BUT, to support Bush’s bullshit war against Afghanistan and then Iraq, after 15 Arabs attacked the Twin Towers, G Dub promised the Repub farm states a YUUUGE windfall, growing corn for ethanol, even though it takes more energy to grow than it produces, IF they’d support his war, championed by The Dick, Cheney.

This Repub make work plan was supported by Fed mandates of 5 and then 10 percent ethanol in all gasoline. Ethanol that damages small engines, reduces performance AND drains precious fresh water aquifers that took hundreds of thousands of years to form.

The Ogalalla aquifer, the largest underground source of fresh water ‘in the world’ is being depleted at an alarming rate as the western drought dries reservoirs. All this to grow corn, which doesn’t deliver the energy it takes to produce the ethanol, while food crops like wheat are grown in places like Russia and Ukraine.

It was originally Repub Congressmen who pushed this travesty, in a trade off for WAR votes, but it has become a Federal handout, mostly to large corporate farms, that is now too large to touch, for any politician. 

I know that’s just ‘how it is’, but it sucks in SO many ways. Thanks again, to GW and The Dick, who rammed it through……
