Shortly after getting our driver's licenses,

Dick Abood and I, with our younger brothers, decided we needed a road trip. It was early spring, lovely weather, and we had heard about rainbow trout being caught at Merritt Reservoir, in a remote part of western Nebraska. We packed basic camping gear and fishing stuff, but very little food, 'cause it was just an overnighter, and we were gonna eat trout. The short version of our adventure starts with the weather changing as soon as we got there and we fished, without success, in a cold wind, ate our hot dogs and beans, and went to bed early in our tent. We woke up to snow the next morning and it snowed all day. When it finally stopped, there was about 18" on the ground, we were the only ones around, and there was no way our old 2WD car was driving out of there. It didn't take long to realize we were gonna be there awhile, as we were far off the beaten path, as far as snowplows were concerned, and we had NO food, other than a couple of hot dog buns and a tin of sardines that Dick had brought for a snack. The only thing I hate worse than liver (I like most everything), is sardines. BUT, by the end of the third day, I remember having half a hot dog bun, with 2 sardines on it, that Dick was good enough to share. It was FANTASTIC! To this day, I still hate liver and sardines, BUT, Ill never forget that delicious sandwich....
