Record Snow Blankets Western States DENVER (Oct. 29) -- A slow-moving autumn storm showed no signs of letting up in Colorado and the western Plains on Thursday, blanketing areas already buried with as much as 3 feet, closing schools and businesses and delaying flights. Roads across Colorado and Wyoming were snow-packed and icy from the first big winter storm of the season in the West, and the snow's not likely to stop anytime soon. The storm spread a blanket of white from northern Utah's Wasatch Front to western Nebraska's northern border with South Dakota. Yup, we're headed out at 6:30 tomorrow morning. I'll wear red....

That yardstick, says 22",

and it's still snowing. I heard Coal Creek Canyon has between 3-4 ft. At least it was enough to close Kari's school, which really broke her heart. Could be kinda tough at Nate/Laura/Piper's, with the flu bug goin' round. Nate opted out of the elk trip, and don't blame him. Sorta wish I could, but Matt needs the break, AND, the elk meat is nice. Quite a snow storm for October. I just know that when I woke up, and looked out at the blizzard, all I could think about was, "Tomorrow, at this time, I'm in a pop-up, in the snow, at 10,000 ft." I'm geting too old for this crap....

Some people never learn

The general sat opposite his commander in chief and explained the problems his army faced fighting in the hills around Kabul: “There is no piece of land in Afghanistan that has not been occupied by one of our soldiers at some time or another,” he said. “Nevertheless much of the territory stays in the hands of the terrorists. We control the provincial centers, but we cannot maintain political control over the territory we seize. “Our soldiers are not to blame. They’ve fought incredibly bravely in adverse conditions. But to occupy towns and villages temporarily has little value in such a vast land where the insurgents can just disappear into the hills.” He went on to request extra troops and equipment. “Without them, without a lot more men, this war will continue for a very, very long time,” he said. These sound as if they could be the words of Lt. Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the top American commander in Afghanistan, to President Obama in recent days or weeks. In fact, they were spoken by ...

The funniest (or worst?),

Image
company slogan? Could be Taco Bell, IF they said, 'we'll give you free gas'. Or, Northwest Airlines, saying, "Get free extra miles". No, it's still gotta be FOXNews, saying "Fair and Balanced" Still the funniest of all time....

If you think,

Image
that Repubs live in the real world, just consider the latest poll #'s for Sarah Palin. 71% of voters say she is UNqualified for the presidency, BUT, over half of Repubs say she is qualified for the toughest, most demanding job in the world. A governor from a remote, sparsely populated state, who quit half way thru her term, whose only prior experience was the mayorship of Wasilla, the meth capitol of Alaska. And you wonder why I have such low regard for the average Republican...

Winter storm warning,

Image
for Denver, for the next 48 hours. GREAT! Right before we head for the mountains, trying to put some elk in the freezer, we get a major storm. Not that I'm complaining (yes, I am), but, why do we have to do this, again? Good news, bad news, but mostly bad. We don't need bad weather to get the elk where we want them. Good news? It will be interesting, if you like deep snow. Could be worse, I guess, as some people don't have adventure in their lives. As an old fart, I'm kinda tired of adventure. Whatever, what will be, will be. We do love the white packages of meat. As Ringo says, 'It Don't Come easy'. Will get back to ya...

IF, it was true,

that the Repubs were the financially responsible party, and 'the business party', I would be a Repub. In fact, I am a registered Repub. BUT, it doesn't take much sense, to see that they are all talk, no action. GHW Bush nearly bankrupted the system, with the S&L crisis, led by his son, Neil, who sacked Silverado, in Denver. Then, Clinton took over, and handed GW Bush, the largest surplus in history. W turned it into the largest deficit, in history. A coincidence? Duh... What you smokin'? The Repubs say one thing, and do the total opposite, and the FOX crowd falls for it. Now, Obama is trying to fix their last disaster, and is getting all kinds of crap, cause he can't turn it around, over night. Give me a break. Look at what's real. Never mind. Look to FOX, they'll tell you what to think. What a bunch of losers...

A voice of reason,

from someone who's 'been there'. Matthew Hoh, the senior U.S. civilian in Afghanistan's Zabul province, resigned in protest because he believes the American effort there is simply fueling the insurgency, the Washington Post reported Tuesday. Hoh, a former Marine Corps captain who also served in Iraq, wrote a four-page letter to the State Department's head of personnel in September, and his resignation became official last week."I have lost understanding of and confidence in the strategic purposes of the United States' presence in Afghanistan," he wrote in the letter. "I have doubts and reservations about our current strategy and planned future strategy, but my resignation is based not upon how we are pursuing this war, but why and to what end." He was strongly motivated by the friends he had lost on the battlefield and the mental anguish he has experienced since returning home, he explained, adding that he "is not some peacenik, pot-sm...

with Rick Reilly, here he is at "Leatherheads" premiere, with hot wife, Cynthia, and brother John. From the article Reilly's 1997 comedic novel tells of a group of bumblers who, after playing for years at a run-down municipal golf course in a working-class Boston neighborhood, concoct a series of schemes that they hope will lead to them teeing off at a nearby elite club. Reilly is a longtime Sports Illustrated columnist, known for his irreverent brand of commentary, who two years ago left the Time Inc. magazine to pen a back-page column for ESPN the Magazine and write for ESPN.com. He also tried his hand at screenwriting with the 2008 football comedy "Leatherheads." I still golf, a couple times each week, with Rick's brother, John, and Homer (Hoover), and Webb, who will have some of his stories in the movie (I'm willing to bet).

It finally happened

The story of 'The Goon Squad", our golf group, is coming to the big screen. REALLY. By Steven Zeitchik October 26, 2009 LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Steve Carell and Warner Bros. are aiming for the fairway. The studio has acquired "Missing Links," a golf comedy based on a novel by ESPN's Rick Reilly. Carell is attached to star as a golfer angling for a better place to play and will produce via his Carousel Prods. banner. "The Break-Up" screenwriter Jay Lavender is writing the screenplay. With slightly different names, Goons become Chops, Homer becomes Hoover, Charlie is Chunkin Charlie, and Lake Valley Golf Course moves to Boston. Lots of stories incorporated in the book that actually happened with/to us. Hope they do a good job with it.

Thank you, Lady J,

for setting me straight, on the OKC, McVeigh bombing. Her cousin was a state trooper who actually talked to/interviewed many of the people involved. As with most conspiracy theories, there is a lot of misinformation. Larry was there, and I have no reason not to believe him. Looks like McVeigh did it, w/Terry Nichols. Still don't trust big gov't, for obvious reasons, but am putting to rest, my OKC bomb conspiracy. You can't believe all you read, no matter how real it seems.

Finally committed,

to the tankless hot water heater. The HOA had a dumpster in the 'hood, and the new HWH hasn't ever screwed up, SO, I got Dave to help me, and we tossed it. Looks different where it used to be....

The FOX whackos,

Image
have a hard time with Obama negotiating with Iran, Venezuela, etc. They liked W's postion of not speaking without preset conditions being met, as in, agreeing that they're wrong and we're right. I wonder how that works when Georgie boy and wife Laura have a disagreement. I can just hear him saying, "I ain't talkin' to you 'til you admit you're WRONG!" I know it would sure work well at my house. It sure doesn't work for diplomacy and world peace, BUT, if your main objective is to drive up the price of oil, it's FANTASTIC strategy...

The hard core right wing

Image
pushes government sponsored Christianity, on our currency, in our classrooms, and in gov't buildings, ignoring our founding fathers, who were well aware of the religious wars that had wracked Europe for centuries, and specifically separated church and state. They conveniently forget the American revolution, where the patriots fought against an occupying army, and see no problem sending troops to occupy foreign countries, calling those who resist, terrorists. They like to claim the only way to be a true patriot, is to support the generals that ALWAYS want more troops. The Christians I know have no problem with 'shock and awe', and the continued war, that killed and wounded tens of thousands of civilians, getting rid of a tyrant, under FALSE pretenses, that had been installed by their own government, mainly because the 'enemy' are of a different religion. Killing in the name of God and country, is a good thing to them. When/where/why/how did they get this interpretati...

Cheney keeps complaining,

Image
that Obama's not acting fast enough in sending more troops. As if Haliburton hasn't profited enough from his wars. Just what we need. Advice from those who couldn't find Bin Laden, so they attacked Iraq on trumped up WMD claims, quadrupled the price of oil, killed more Americans than 9-11, then went back to Afghanistan, after Al Queda moved to Pakistan, and are fighting religious zealots who had NOTHING to do with 9-11. Thanks for the help, DICK!

Things are different,

Image
here in Colorado, now that medical marijuana became legal. I called my doctor, and he told me to smoke two joints and call him in the morning.

You think the economy is past the worst?

Image
Not to be TOO pessimistic, but I'm not the only one who thinks we are in a W shaped recovery, (in honor of George W), and we are near the center of the letter. All I can say is, pretend you are a Boy Scout, and BE PREPARED! Reason #1: Dramatic loss of wealth Reason #2: The jobless recovery Reason #3: Consumers are afraid to spend money Reason #4: Changing consumer attitudes Reason #5: The credit crunch will continue Reason #6: Excess capacity Reason #7: Businesses aren't spending Reason #8: Uncle Sam can't bail us out Reason #9: The Fed can't do it either Reason #10: Take a good look around

It's hard to pick,

the biggest lie, that FOX puts out, because there are SO many, but the most pervasive is, "IF you don't agree with every right-wing, militaristic move, you are UNpatriotic." Give me a break. Because we don't agree with pre-emptive war, based on lies, and every request for MORE troops. Because we would rather negotiate, than ignore or attack, we are unpatriotic? Only the FOX crowd could be so dense...

A while back,

Image
I asked readers to recommend a blog theme, for me, and Nate mentioned new music, and I said I heard very little, BUT, that was before deciding to do Ipod/random. Lots of good stuff. Will get back w/ya...

Carol went out,

Image
with the girls, last night to see "Wicked", which is great, but she told me she'd be home by 11. About midnight, after laying there, imagining stuff, cause it was rain, turning to sleet, and getting colder all the time, I decided to call her cell phone, but I don't remember her #, cause I just use speed dial on my cell, but I had forgotten my cell phone in my golf bag, and it was in the back of my car. Wasn't wearing much, and was in the back of the garage, bent over going through my golf bag, right inside the gar door, all the time imagining that Carol is hitting the gar door opener as I was rummaging. Woulda scarred some retinas.... BUT(T?), she had been ordered by hb to turn off her phone for the performance. Anyway, turned out OK, but I WAS worried about my honey. Sorry for mental images....

Does anyone know

Image
someone who is good at hooking up a sound system for the upgrade I wanna do? Will pay for or barter with someone who knows what they're doing and will make a trip to Broomfield. Thanks

Also, does anyone know?

Image
if there's a way for whatever is playing on your ipod, to show up somewhere on your tv screen, when you are listening to music, but have something on the big screen, so you don't have to keep getting up to see what song is on, that you REALLY like, which is a LOT of them, since I had Nate and Ted stock my Ipod, plus I've put a lot on that I've never heard. If it's not an app, or something like that, one of you computer geniuses ought to figure out a way to do it. Could be in the corner, small, visible all the time, or larger, and operated by remote. That should pay for some vacations you, if marketed right, and maybe you'd give me one.... Probably already available, though?

Made my first ever

sale on E-bay, today. I have done quite of bit of buying on it and Craig's List, over the years and some selling Craig's, but had never sold on E-bay. Took the picture, read how to post an add on E-bay. No big deal. Just gotta decide what you wanna sell, how much you want to start the auction at, when to start/how long, postage and handling charges, method of payment, a Paypal acct and a couple other things. Anyway, shipped the pkg today, after seeing payment posted on Paypal. Will probably do some more stuff, but not sure what yet. Am starting a list and trying to determine what/when/how much? Craig's and Ebay together are a great combo of buying/ selling, based on products, etc. And, I gotta say, Carol is all for me cleaning out the garage/closets/storeroom/etc. Might as well sell stuff that we aren't gonna use, and someone else could. Am gonna use Fedex or UPS pick up, cause I hate to stand in line at the post office, and just build it into the price. Gonna try to ga...

Obama and GHW Bush

Image
got together, to encourage volunteerism. Seems bipartisan and good, huh? Not if you are FOXNews and/or Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh's wacky, weepy, 'special needs' cousin. He claims having the prez ask for volunteerism is 'like living in Chaiman Mao's China'. No shit. He said it. Typical FOX/Beck crap. And some people eat this stuff up. No wonder the White House came out and said FOXNews is not a legitimate news agency, but merely a wing of the Repub party. Duh, you really think so?

I learned,

Image
that car theft is way down, in this economy. It's hard to steal a car, when someone is living in it. Thanks, George....

From cable TV

Image
I've learned that the Repub health care plan consists of, don't get sick, but if you do, die soon. The alternative Repub plan? Take your gun to the Dr.'s office. Ta da... We do know that we pay 35% more, in health care, than the rest of the world. THAT, is the insurance company's profit. We could pay for health care by getting out of Bush's war, in Iraq. It seems obvious to me, but not to our congressmen. What's wrong here, other than logic??? The other thing I learned is that Rush Limbaugh may sue (somebody?), because he was denied his life-long dream. Of owning black people. Drum roll, please.... You gotta love cable TV.

I love it

Image
The White house has finally quit being a punching bag, for the jerks at FOX News: What I think is fair to say about Fox -- and certainly it's the way we view it -- is that it really is more a wing of the Republican Party," Dunn said on CNN. "They take their talking points, put them on the air; take their opposition research, put them on the air. And that's fine. But let's not pretend they're a news network the way CNN is." Let's not pretend they are a news organization. It is a political party that bought a TV network. That's ALL it is. They have a bunch of 'bought and paid for' "journalists" that 'interpret' the news, for the benefit of the Repub Party. If you can't see that, or won't admit it, you are a hopeless idiot. But, you're not alone...

This was one of them,

GOOD weekends. Fantastic fall Rocky Mountain weather, with the bluest skies you can imagine, perfect temperature. Laze around the house, then Saturday eve w/Ted and Kari, going out for Mexican food, then back to their house for Rock Band, with the new Beatles songs. (We really rocked!) And then Sunday, another great day, with a visit to Piper/Nate/Laura, on the way up to Central City/Blackhawk, to check out the new casinos. Haven't been up there since they raised the stakes, and added craps and roulette. The place has changed, but is still a beautiful fall drive, along Clear Creek. CU beat Kansas, and Homer is finally back from Greece, so we have a tee-time tomorow morning. Life is good....

From today's paper

Image
Repubs complained about Obama's Nobel Peace Prize, because it represents everything they hate. Foreigners, blacks and peace. Meanwhile, Obama said he would pick up the prize, in person, IF he could temporarily pull himself away from the two wars he is conducting.

Notice sent to my 4-some

Ole was the victim of an unfortunate accident, and the authorities decided to have members of his golf foursome identify the body. First John looked at the badly burned face and said, 'Can't tell for sure, roll him over.' He then pulled his clothes back and said, 'Nope, that ain't him'. Homer and Webb said and did nearly the exact same thing. Confused, the officer asked Webb what they were looking for. "Well", he said, "I'd never seen them, but whenever we went anywhere, someone would say, 'Here comes Ole with those 3 assholes' ". Hope they think it's funny.

Just finished reading,

Image
a FOX News rant, about how the country is hopelessly lost, because the liberals are in charge. This is obvious, to the FOX crew, because Rush was dropped by the group trying to buy the Rams, after a review of his racist remarks. Rush, claimed Donovan McNabb was a starting QB, only because the NFL wanted a 'black' to do well, and he was obviously overrated, just before McNabb led his team to the Super Bowl. Rush then went on to compare the NFL to 'a bunch of Crips and Bloods', in a gang war. It's not hard for me to see, why many NFL players, (who are mostly black), wouldn't want to play for this buffoon. BUT, in FOX land, this is all about a liberal plot against conservatives. RIIIIGHT...

Some how I missed out,

Image
on that Nebraka gene, that makes you believe, whatever the Repub Party says, no matter how outrageous the lie. Not sure how it happened, BUT, I know I am a minority. Somehow, that part of the world doesn't need facts. If the Repubs say it, it is truth. Wow! Must be easier than actually having to think. They are the fiscally responsible party, that took the largest surplus, ever, and ran it into the largest debt, since WWII. They are the 'friends of business' that bankrupted most of the large Wall Street firms, and gave us the worst recession of the last 80 years. They are the military geniuses, who started a pre-emptive war, killing hundreds of thousands, on 'oops, bad intelligence' and turned a huge majority of the world against us, while running our military into the ground, and leaving us a trillion dollar bill. They hand out $760 billion in TARP money to their banker buddies, then scream about a stimulus package for main street, that they just put out of busines...

It's about time,

Image
the administration called out Fox News, for who they really are. Calling FOX News "a wing of the Republican Party," the Obama administration on Sunday escalated its war of words against the channel, even as observers questioned the wisdom of a White House war on a news organization. "What I think is fair to say about FOX -- and certainly it's the way we view it -- is that it really is more a wing of the Republican Party," said Anita Dunn, White House communications director, on CNN. "Let's not pretend they're a news network the way CNN is." C'mon. Is there anyone who didn't already know this?

News Flash!

Image
The Repubs say Obama doesn't deserve the Nobel Peace prize, and demand he send 40,000 more troops to the Viet Nam-like quagmire in Afghanistan, where empires go to die, because you know we have to defend against another 9-11. As if that plot couldn't be hatched in a one bedroom apartment somewhere. Anyone see the movie, "Charlie Wilson's War", with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts? Where the Repubs backed the EXACT same people they want to fight now? No more Korea or Viet Nam, and Iraq is winding down? Peace sucks, war rocks! Go Repubs!!! Thanks for the great advice. You are SO smart....

Sad day,

Image
for me, when the first freeze kills all the flowers. Saturday, the 10th, broke a 104 year old record, for low temperature, by EIGHT degrees! That's cold. Just not ready for winter this year. I know it'll be a beautiful Indian Summer (I hope), but my blood is kinda thin this year, or something like that. I usually enjoy the first snow. Not this year....

New Piper pic

Image
Nate sent this new picture of Piper. She, and Laura, visited on Friday, then the girls all went to the mall. Guess it's never too young to start.

The Repubs cheered loudly,

Image
when Chicago didn't win the Olympic bid, because they took it as a personal defeat for Obama. The same buffoons who complained that Obama wasn't doing enough to create jobs, criticized him for trying to land the Olympics. Such 'pretzel logic' actually makes sense to those with double digit IQ's. Now, when he wins the Nobel Peace Prize, they bitch and moan because they say he doesn't deserve it. He obviously won, in part, because he is recognized around the globe as trying to undo some of the damage that their boy W inflicted on the U.S. and the rest of the world. To these hypocrites, saying 'we're sorry' is a sign of weakness, even after your administration brought down the entire world economic system, with $147/bbl oil, an 'oops, bad information' war that's killed and wounded hundreds of thousands of innocents, and changed the rules of banking so a select few could make billions, while bankrupting millions. At least he didn't have s...

Bugs update

For those of you who hadn't heard, Bugs, who had poor circulation in his feet, from diabetes, got an infection in his right foot, didn't realize it 'til too late, got gangrene, and was found, delerious, by his 11 year old daughter. Had to have his foot amputated, just below the knee. Scott says he is doing good, all things considered, and is in Grand Junction, in physical therapy, cracking jokes, and waiting for his prosthesis. Hurts just to think about it. I'll never forget the night the 6 of us piled out of the RV, walked into the restaurant in Canada while everyone stopped eating and stared at us. Bugs, the 6'6" 300 pounder, looked at 'em and said, in all seriousness, 'Any of y'all speak English in here?" Got a lot of Bugs' stories, now that I think about it...

Fox News lead story

Jobless Rate Climbs to 9.8 Percent in September It's the unemployment rate, stupid. That could be the rallying cry for Republicans in elections next year, and possibly in 2012, as they seek to regain power in Congress and the White House. Despite signs of improvement in the economy, the unemployment rate keeps climbing -- up to a 26-year high of 9.8 percent in September -- potentially providing Republicans political ammunition and putting Democrats on the defensive. WTF? How stupid do they think the voters are? As stupid as the Fox crew? Just why are SO MANY people unemployed? Because Bush wrecked the economy, that's why. Ain't no big secret. Sure, the Repubs would like to blame it on Obama, BUT, give me a break, are there really that many idiots out there?

One of these days

Image
On October 5th, ’09, Comcast Cable, here in Broomfield, went out, about mid-morning. Had happened before, but wasn’t such a big deal, cause we didn’t have ‘the bundle’, then. The bundle is Comcast’s fiber-optic package, which includes our phone, cable TV and high-speed internet. Also, last time it happened, it was just for a few minutes, and although frustrating, it was no big deal. BUT, this time it’s been off for over 8 hours, and who knows how long it will be off. Got some stuff done around the house, including installing our new tankless hot water heater that arrived by FedEx today. I finally sent the old one back, after having to hit the reset button WAY too much lately. A real drag, in the morning, instead of having hot water, you just wait and wait and realize you gotta go to the basement and hit the reset button. Anyway, they agreed to take it back, and it finally got here today, after using our leaky HWH for a couple of weeks. It seems to work, and kept me occupied for over an...
