My buddy Dave was published in the NYT today. Good wordsmith who puts my thoughts into words…

Yes, America has deep and abiding cultural ties to Europe, including those of ethnic kinships and shared religious traditions. Such ties are valuable and should be cherished and nourished for the generations ahead on both sides of the Atlantic.

But the strongest ties we have with the Europeans is that we joined together eighty-five years ago in common cause to rid the world of Nazi fascism – a barbarian cult of personality built upon a foundation of racial hatred and a strategic aim of “cultural dominance” by “the Master Race”.

250,000 American servicemen gave their lives to help liberate Europe from the Nazis and bring freedom, democracy and universal human rights back to the Continent.

Imagine how stunned the Europeans now are to see a swaggering, ignorant, bully of an American president – drunk on his own cult of personality and driven by poisonous strains of pure ethnic and religious bigotry – demanding that the Anglo-American alliance be based not upon our shared political, civic and economic ideals – but rather upon the goal of ensuring “dominance” in Europe and America of yet another variation of "the Master Race" - united in keeping out "the Untermenschen".

As an American, it makes me want to throw up.

I can't even begin to fathom how utterly betrayed, bitter and abandoned the Europeans must feel. And how gag-inducing it must be for them to have to appease a petty tyrant like Trump in attempting to scavenge what scraps might remain of the world's once-greatest alliance.
