In the hours after news of the raid, gunmen suspected to be his supporters blocked highways across several states and set cars and businesses ablaze, prompting the U.S. State Department to issue a security warningadvising Americans in several Mexican states to "shelter in place" until further notice.
Cars and businesses were also set on fire farther across the country in Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cancun on the east side.
It named Jalisco State (including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara), Baja California State (including Tijuana, Tecate, and Ensenada), Quintana Roo State (including Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum), as the most violence-hit locations and told tourists to ‘shelter in place’.
