in Lucerne, which had been there since the 1300's, but 2/3 of it burnt down in 1993. They left some of the charred sections at the edge of the damage, which was caused when someone flicked a cigarette to the water, but it landed in a boat moored to the bridge and the center burned. Must have been terrible. Gotta say that Lucerne, or Luzern, was my favorite 'surprise' of the trip, as it is SO beautiful in so many ways. Was eating a late dinner with some friends at a dark outdoor restaurant when I reached for part of our (shared)sausage and kraut dinner and felt something hit my hand. Something warm and runny. Bird poop, that would have landed in our food, BUT, hit my hand. Was gross, and everyone had a good laugh, but could have been worse. If my hand hadn't been there, it would have been IN our dinner, and if we had seen it, it would have been yucky. BUT, if we hadn't seen it happen, we would have eaten it, and had a real sh***y dinner. You had to be there...
