A couple years ago I caught the last part of ‘Blues Brothers 2000’, and loved it. Some (ok, quite a few) stupid parts, yeah, BUT, a whole lotta great music more than make up for it.
It’s got all the old cast, mostly, with John Goodman playing Elwood Blues.
Lotta the same songs, with Riders in the Sky, Respect, Blues Bros theme song, and LOTS of car wrecks and an AMAZING cast of musicians and some of the best harp (harmonica) you’ll ever hear.
In addition to all the original musicians, there’s also,
The Louisiana Gator Boys is a blues supergroup created for the film. They face The Blues Brothers in a Battle of the Bands. The band is composed of:
- Jeff "Skunk" Baxter – guitar
- Gary U.S. Bonds – vocals
- Eric Clapton – vocals and guitar
- Clarence Clemons – vocals, tenor saxophone and tambourine
- Jack DeJohnette – drums
- Bo Diddley – vocals and guitar
- Jon Faddis – trumpet
- Isaac Hayes – vocals
- Dr. John – vocals and piano
- B.B. King as Malvern Gasperone – vocals and guitar
- Tommy "Pipes" McDonnell – vocals
- Charlie Musselwhite – vocals and harmonica
- Billy Preston – vocals and synthesizer
- Lou Rawls – vocals
- Joshua Redman – tenor saxophone
- Paul Shaffer as Marco / Himself – keyboards
- Koko Taylor – vocals
- Travis Tritt – vocals and guitar
- Jimmie Vaughan – vocals and guitar
- Grover Washington Jr. – baritone saxophone
- Willie Weeks – bass guitar
- Steve Winwood – vocals and organ
- Wilson Pickett, James Brown, Paul Schaefer, etc.
And the Tent Revival, with the congregation dancing ‘ in the spirit’, is worth ALL the dumb stuff. And the Battle of the Bands, is the perfect finale to a movie full of great music.
And I thought no movie could ever break the ‘wrecked cars’ record of the original Blues Bros.. Wrong….
True, they didn’t need the little white kid on the harmonica, and no movie’s perfect, but the final song ‘New Orleans’ with the all star cast is totally off the chart.
Try it, you’ll love it. If not, that’s your fault and you’re hopeless.
