In a rare show of global unity, countries adopt landmark climate ruling

Despite U.S. opposition, an overwhelming majority of nations agreed that failing to address climate change is a danger to our future

On May 20, 2026, the UN General Assembly adopted a landmark resolution (141-8) affirming that nations have a legal obligation to address climate change, based on a 2025 International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling. The resolution, led by Vanuatu, reinforces the 1.5°C target, urges a transition from fossil fuels, and establishes that states may face legal accountability for climate harm. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
