 President Donald Trump’s settlement of a lawsuit brought by himself to create a $1.8 billion slush fund to pay out to his supporters who claim to have been wronged by the government is perhaps his most audacious act of corruption to date.

This is not just against Department of Justice precedent, nor simply theft to shower Trump’s friends and supporters with cash, although it is both of those things. It is also one more move in Trump’s push for autocratic power: Here, Trump is setting policy, appropriating funds and spending money to execute that policy all by himself. It marks yet another step towards destroying the way the government is supposed to work.

A permanent ‘get out of jail, free’ card, for the kind of tax crimes that allowed him to pay $750 in taxes, on an income in the ‘tens of millions’, and then sue the government, that HE ran, for $10 BILLION, and settle for $1.8 billion.
