Trump’s comments about the military and the bond market betray his economic illiteracy

The president, in a rather literal sense, just doesn’t know what he’s talking about when it comes to economic policies he really ought to understand.

“The yields have come back up since [Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s initial intervention in the bond market],” a reporter reminded the president. “Have you talked to him about another type of intervention? Is that something he will be doing?”

Trump replied, “We have many types of intervention. That’s one. The ultimate intervention is our military, and if we have to use that, we will.”

WTF?

If this were simply a matter of dishonesty and deception, it would be easier to understand. After all, Trump’s reputation as a prolific liar is well deserved and has been earned over the course of many years.

But his comments about “the ultimate intervention” being “our military” when asked about bond yields are a qualitatively different kind of problem: The president, in a rather literal sense, just doesn’t know what he’s talking about when it comes to economic policies he really ought to understand.
