One of the MAIN reasons that the USPS books look SO bad, is cuz the Bush admin made the USPS fund their employees health insurance program, SEVENTY FIVE YEARS INTO THE FUTURE!
Something that NO OTHER govt agency, or private business, is required to do. Before then, the Post Office was actually making money, BUT, the 2006 bill caused them to start hemorrhaging red ink, and it hasn’t stopped.
Don’t believe me? Google it!
In 2006, Congress passed a law to require the USPS to prefund 75 years worth of retiree health benefits in the span of ten years—a cost of approximately $110 billion. Although the money is intended to be set aside for future Post Office retirees, the funds are instead being diverted By the Trump administration to help pay down the national debt.Feb 5, 2020
