File it under, ‘Wow, I’m shocked!’

Attorney General William Barr said President Trump fired the U.S. attorney in Manhattan, who had led inquiries into Trump circles.

President Trump removed the prosecutor, Geoffrey S. Berman, United States attorney for the Southern District of New York, after he had refused to step down on Friday night.
Mr. Trump’s announcement deepened a crisis over the independence of law enforcement and the president.
The dismissal of Mr. Berman came after his office brought a series of highly sensitive cases that worried and angered Mr. Trump and others in his inner circle.

“To take someone out suddenly while they’re investigating the president’s lawyer, it is just unprecedented in modern times.”
