Again, a Letter to the Editor reflects my beliefs
Distrust of authority is partly why I voted against Donald Trump
Re: “What the Vietnam War tells us about Trump voters,” Sept. 24 David Von Drehle opinion column.
Count me contrarian to David Von Drehle’s column. I have often over the years described myself as a child of the 1960s and hence allergic to authority and distrustful of government, just as Von Drehle describes. But I voted against Donald Trump partially for that reason.
Trump’s “Believe me” says a lot of why, as does his campaign to discredit the press. As Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein proved (“All the President’s Men”), the press is our best counter to secretive government. To those who voted for Trump because they thought they were getting a business genius, I say you got the secretive and authoritarian mind of a mafia don.
Trump has never had to report to a board and has never dealt with shareholders. He simply has run his businesses as a “my way or the highway” czar. From my point of view, that’s not been particularly efficient or effective.
